Igreja de N. Sr.ª da Conceição (ou Capela das Conchas)

The Church of N. Senhora da Conceição (or Chapel of the Shells) monument is annexed to the gardens of the Royal Palace, founded in 1622 by D. Henrique Henriques. Originally dedicated to St. Jerome, still has traces of curious decoration with conchoides elements and limestone. We can find similar ornamentation in the garden entrance of the Royal Palace.

This type of decoration, seventeenth-century taste, influenced by strong Portuguese maritime tradition, is assigned to D. Jorge Henriques, man much traveled stops the Far East.
